Minutes of the
Vestry of
St. Timothy’s
Episcopal Church
February 28, 2008
Present: Senior warden
Chris Large; Judy Champa; Sheryl Otter; Steve Polston; John Kurek;
Jane Bostwick
Chris prayed.
Chris called the meeting to order at
7:12 p.m.
Judy motioned acceptance of the
minutes of the Jan. 17, 2008 meeting; John seconded. The motion passed on a
voice vote.
Chris said that Treasurer Chuck Nemeth
asked to be given authority to invest $20,000 in a short-term CD to take
advantage of favorable rates. Judy motioned that Chuck
be given authority to make a short-term CD investment of $20,000 if the
opportunity arises. John seconded. The motion was passed on voice vote.
A. Controversial communicant — Chris
re-capped recent activities, including the gentleman’s desire to take on
leadership roles in the parish. Meetings with clergy, wardens, the bishop and
the gentleman resulted in no change of status.
B. New assistant priest — The Rev.
Kirsteen Wilkinson, assistant priest at St. Alban’s, will begin at St.
Timothy’s very soon, in a time-sharing/cost-sharing arrangement with St.
Alban’s, St. Timothy’s and the Diocese. St. Timothy’s will bear one-third of
the cost and the Rev. Wilkinson will be a full-time employee of the Diocese for
purposes of pension, insurance and payroll taxes, and serve at St. Timothy’s 15
hours per week.
C. Newsletter — Gail Allen will
contribute an article about the nursery; Chris will write about the 50th
anniversary.
D. Food pantry cart — the food
pantry needs a new cart. John motioned that Judy be allowed to purchase a cart
costing up to $100; Judy seconded. The motion passed on voice vote.
E. Anniversary plans — Chris asked
Steve to continue working with Diocesan resources for a Webcast/videocast with
the Rev. Malcolm Boyd, founding priest and a Canon in the Diocese of Los
Angeles. The Right Rev. Clyde Wood, retired Bishop in Australia and former
exchange clergy at St. Timothy’s, will visit on May 4. Chris said that
arrangements for a visit by the Right Rev. Ed Leidel, retired Bishop in
Michigan, are being pursued. Chris said that the vestry needs to form an
anniversary committee.
F. Memorial tree fund — Chris said
that $1,100 has been given by parishioners to fund a memorial tree planting
program.
A. Roof concerns — the possibility of leaks in the sanctuary roof is being investigated and bids are being collected.
B. Kitchen fire suppression — the
fire suppression system in the range hood will be re-charged by Koorsen.
C. Exterior lighting — Dennis
Dworski will pursue changing the light bulb above the rear entrance. The vestry
discussed signage and lighting of the front exterior to bring more attention to
the building.
D. Nursery — the Women’s Guild is
nearly finished with purchasing furnishings.
A. Junior warden — Chris said that the
vestry needs a junior warden.
B. Offering counters — Counters were
appointed for the coming year:
2008

July — Keira Sparrow
August — Judy Champa
September — Steve Polston
October — John Kurek
November — Liz Manning

C. Tidings
— Chris noted that the March issue of the Diocesan newspaper included
Steve’s article about Johnathon Groffred’s service at the church in early
February, but that an article we submitted about the parish’s 50th anniversary
was not printed. Chris said that she would pursue an opportunity to update the
parish’s mailing list with Tidings to
make sure members were receiving the paper.
D. Memorial contribution — Chris
noted that the Sparrow family gave $500 in honor and memory of Johnathon; the
Vestry discussed appropriate ways to recognize Johnathon’s life, including
purchase of artwork or sanctuary furnishings.
E. Visiting clergy — the Rev.
Henrietta Williams, a deacon in the Diocese of the Eastern Carolinas, is
visiting the parish for awhile and has asked to participate in liturgical
roles.
F. Upcoming events — Vestry
weekend/retreat will be March 15; Holy Week is March 16-22, with Maundy
Thursday, two services on Good Friday and perhaps an Easter Vigil service.
Easter is March 23. Deanery confirmation is May 1, location to be determined.
G. Rosary class — Sheryl
recognized Judy for teaching a rosary class and showing parishioners how to
construct their own rosary.
Adjournment
was at 8:36 p.m.
Respectfully
submitted,
Steve
