Minutes of the Vestry

St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church

October 16, 2008

 

 

Present:
The Rev. Kirsteen Wilkinson, vicar; Sheryl Otter, junior warden; Liz Manning; Steve Polston; Judy Champa; Elaine Braverman; Kitty Herndon; Jane Bostwick; Ed Champa and Michael Ewing, visitors to the meeting. 

Devotion:
The meeting began about 7:05 p.m. with a devotion led by Elaine Braverman, who read Hymn No. 576 (“God is Love”).

Approval of minutes of Sept. 18, 2008 meeting:
Jane moved approval of the minutes; Kitty seconded. The motion was approved on voice vote.

Financial report:
Elaine asked about altar flowers fund deficit. Judy asked about vestry weekend fund deficit. Steve moved acceptance of the report; Judy seconded. The motion was approved on voice vote.

Old business:
Elaine led a discussion about the wedding planning document that has been under discussion.

Kirsteen said that the mission strategy support from diocesan funds has been set; that Treasurer Chuck Nemeth invested $20,000 in a short-term CD; that the Bishop has signed letters of agreement for The Rev. Robin Myers, liturgical presider, and for Kirsteen, vicar.

Property commission – John and David Kurek replaced faucets in the ladies’ restroom.

Kirsteen said that the vicar’s discretionary fund checking account is being finalized and that the open plate (undesignated) collections on the first Sunday of each month are assigned to the discretion of the vicar.

Discussions about finding a safe for parish documents continued.

Steve moved that a committee be formed to discuss use of the parish facilities for weddings; Sheryl seconded. The motion was approved on voice vote.

Kirsteen said that she had a very positive experience at the CREDO clergy seminar and will share some of the insights as time progresses.

Kirsteen led a discussion about the need to form a vicar advisory group, a three-person support group, that is standard practice in congregations.

Kirsteen will form a liturgy commission.

Kirsteen said that Diocesan Communications/Evangelism Director Kathy Copas may come to meet with the vestry in February.

Steve presented information about a Millennium Development Goals fundraiser called the Popsicle stick cross.

Upcoming events:

Adult faith formation is Oct. 26.
Diocesan convention is Oct. 24-26.
Craft Bazaar is Nov. 1.
Election Day is Nov. 4.
Memorial tree planting will occur in November.
Thanksgiving service will be at 7 p.m. on Thanksgiving Eve. 

For the good of the order:

Sheryl said that $270 was collected for United Thank Offering.
Sheryl is researching costs for a new freezer for the food pantry.
Judy is cataloging food pantry recipients’ information.
The choir is re-forming.

Compline:
The vestry prayed the service of Compline about 8:40 p.m.

The meeting adjourned following the prayers.
